Crowns and Bridges

Crowns and bridges are restorations that are cemented onto teeth or dental implants. A gap left by a missing tooth can trigger the neighboring teeth to shift, resulting in gum disease and a host of other issues including TMJ disorder.

Crowns

A crown is often used to cover a large filling. It is also used to cover a severely damaged or cracked tooth. It is a cap that is fitted over the tooth and cemented in place. It can be made from resin, porcelain, alloy or porcelain fused to metal. Resin and porcelain crowns are made to look like your natural tooth.

Crowns may be used to:

  • Help prevent tooth fracture by covering a weakened tooth.
  • Repair a fractured tooth.
  • Cover a dental implant.
  • Improve the appearance of a poorly shaped or severely stained tooth.
  • Cover a tooth after root canal treatment.

Bridges

A dental bridge is often used to cover the space left by missing teeth. A bridge is cemented to natural teeth (or dental implants). It is one option for filling the gap created by a missing tooth, and this fixed prosthetic can improve your smile and at the same time, restore the function of your teeth.
